Job Shop Lean Redux

Migrating TPS to The Job Shop

When implementing Lean in a job shop, The fundamental issue is workflow and few job shops do it effectively. It seems impossible to rationalize and smooth workflow when no two jobs are the same, skills are specialized and demand is highly variable. However, we can address this problem with techniques from Group Technology. There are other differences between job shops and high volume manufacturers in the areas of:

  • Cellular Manufacturing

  • Group Technology

  • Value Stream Mapping

  • Kanban & Scheduling

  • Work Standardization

  • Implementation

Our web page on Job Shop Lean has more detail. Along with our Implementation pages it can guide planning and help assure effective application of basic lean principles to your specific operations.

This issue is similar to my letter of about a year ago. there are several good reasons for the repetition. First, much of the lean literature does not address job shops very well. Second, workflow is so fundamental and important but often taken for granted.

The annual Job Shop Lean Conference is coming up and many of you would find it a worthwhile experience.  This conference has been organized by a colleague and old friend, Shahrukh Irani. I have attended in the past and can highly recommend it.

Best Regards,
